Newt Gingrich has scored big points in debates by at times mildly admonishing the moderator for asking a “gotcha” question to down right attacking them as “biased and appalling”. His latest was in the January 19th South Carolina debate. The CNN moderator asked him about an ABC interview with Gingriche’s ex-wife. In the interview she alleged that Newt Gingrich had asked her for an “open marriage”. Newt’s response went like this.
“I am appalled that you would begin a presidential debate on a topic like that,” Gingrich told the CNN moderator. “To take an ex-wife and make it, two days before the primary, a significant question in a presidential campaign is as close to despicable as anything I can imagine.”
He also pointed out that this sort of bias questioning by the elite media made it hard to govern the country and difficult to get good people to run for public office.
The crowd met his response with a standing ovation and it wasn’t his first. What I wonder is are these responses simply him defending himself from what he sees as inappropriate questions, or is there a higher goal?
It’s no big secret that the media is Barak Obama’s biggest friend and ally in his political campaign as well as his most powerful weapon in swaying public opinion. Is Newt intentionally, slowly, and effectively desensitizing the public to the media spin of partisan and destructive politics? If so he is doing himself a big favor if he is the nominee. He’s doing a favor for the country as a whole, and he’s doing a favor for any other conservative candidate that may be running.
After the MSM’s smear attempts, if his poll numbers are any indication, it’s working.
