In the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings there has been a rush to propose and pass new laws in the attempt to prevent something like this from happening again. This has so far resulted in the state of New York hastily passing new laws on the types of legal weapons as well as magazine sizes, registrations, and background checks. In their haste the New York state government aside from taking away both federal and state constitutional rights has succeeded in passing nothing but bad law that won’t do a darn thing to solve the problem. That’s bad enough, but there is an attempt to move this law structure to a federal level, but that isn’t my concern. It’s doubtful it would gain enough support to pass. What does concern me are the measures that are being embraced by liberals and conservatives alike as common sense solutions.
It seems that under the guise of wanting to seem reasonable and concerned even gun rights advocates are willing to strengthen the background checks and mental competency requirements to purchase a firearm. It sounds like a slam dunk. Nobody wants insane and dangerous people possessing firearms. The medical profession can set standards of competency and stability which can be used to identify hazardous behavior and recommend these people not possess firearms.
Ahhhh but wait. Here comes the sticker. Since Obamacare the medical profession no longer sets standards of medical practice. That is now handled by our very own Federal Department of Health and Human Services. Is there anything to stop them from implementing a standard of practice which says that if a person is of the opinion that the government is not abiding by the constitution that person must be delusional? Or if someone believes that they should be able to use a firearm to protect themselves, their families, and their God given rights they are a danger to society and should not be allowed to possess a firearm? Why not? They already think your church can be forced to buy your condoms for you just because they say so. It’s not the laws that are as dangerous as the regulatory power that congress always gives away with them. More and more is given from the people to an agency.
The regulatory web that is being woven is a tricky one. Well planned and executed so you don’t even notice. Do not give up your rights for the sake of seeming reasonable. There are already plenty of gun control laws on the books. No matter what, criminals and crazies don’t obey the laws that will strip your rights..
